Ricky Gervais targetted pop stars Justin Bieber and Madonna as he hosted the Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles last night (Jan 15).

The 'Life's Too Short' actor returned for a third stint as host of the prestigious awards, promising to keep his controversial style and strike fear into the A-List stars gathered for the awards.

However, Gervais was relatively tame and opened with a joke at Kim Kardashian's expense - comparing the Globes to the Oscars, Gervais said last night's ceremony was: "what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton - a bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker."

Justin Bieber did not escape ridicule either with Gervais doubting his ability to Father a child, claiming he must "have used one of Martha Stewart's turkey basters."

Madonna fired back on behalf of the celebs though, joking that Gervais should "come over here and do something about it" after he referenced her song, 'Like A Virgin' during her introduction.

George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, The Descendents and The Actor took home awards at the ceremony.
