Join us as we introduce you to the ten acts we think will be illuminating the pop world with their brilliant music, stunning performances and huge debut albums in 2012. Here we have Yasmin, the dancefloor stunner with a message of her own and a handful of future classics.
PopDash: First things first: How was 2011 for you?
Yasmin: Last year was absolutely amazing for me. I discovered a lot about myself and I have done so many things I never thought I would achieve. I had two top forty singles in the UK, played on the main stage at so many festivals. 2011 was all about growth and introducing myself to music fans and exposing myself to people – but not in a dodgy way!
PopDash: We're very excited to hear your début album in 2012. What is the current status of the record?
I'm still working on it at the moment. It's all about picking the right songs to go on there and I’m very focused on the writing at the moment. I prefer writing alone to writing in a group and that process can take some time but then you hit a moment of inspiration and you get through so many songs that way. I have worked with some incredible people on the album so far though, people like Shy FX, Labrinth and Freemasons who have really helped shape the album. Freemasons have been incredible actually, every time I meet them I feel like I have had therapy because they help me so much.
PopDash: We also hear that you have covered an absolute classic in the shape of Kings Of Tomorrow's 'Finally'...
Freemasons again actually. They really help me out and give me a lot of belief in what I'm doing. 'Finally' is one of my favourite songs ever, probably in the top three for me personally and when you really listen to the lyrics it's very poignant and beautiful despite it being this huge dance track. I liked the idea of stripping back that song to just piano and guitar and I love it – it's very emotional.
PopDash: What is your goal for 2012?
I'd like to have a platinum selling album. I think that shows that a lot of people have connected to your work and that is something i'm really keen to achieve.
PopDash: And is there anything coming up in your diary that you are really excited about?
Yes! I am doing my first headline show of the year at The Borderline on February 5th. I can't wait to get back on stage with my band again.
PopDash: Now, we're tipping you for success in 2012 but do you have any tips of your own for the next twelve months?
Bluey Robinson is super talented, Stooshe, Mali and Josh Kumar also. There are so many talented artists around, it's incredible.
PopDash: Have you worked with any other artists on your album?
Not really. I'm really not a fan of the whole business of setting up collaborations by calling up someone and arranging it like a business deal. I've talked about writing a ballad with Ed Sheeran and I have made a track with David Stewart who is actually Example's guitarist. Anything I do though is going to be because it feels right, not because it will get me a higher chart position.
PopDash: Finally, is there anything else coming up in 2012 outside of the world of music that you are excited about?
I'm actually working on a TV show which is very exciting. It's a world that I am unfamiliar with but one that is very interesting. It's not about me being an actress but working behind the scenes. The show is a satire.
PopDash: So are you the next Charlie Brooker?
Haha, maybe!
Yasmin's new single 'Light Up The World' is available to download from January 15th.
