Big In 2012: Stooshe

Introducing the new, outspoken wild girls of pop...

By Jamal Guthrie on Wednesday 4th January 2012

Join us as we introduce you to the ten acts we think will be illuminating the pop world with their brilliant music, stunning performances and huge debut albums in 2012. Stooshe’s outlandish dress sense and x rated lyrics have definitely caught the attention of all the right people. Originally spotted in TopShop, the throwback girl group are on the BBC Sound of 2012 long list and are set to blast a different kind of girl power through the radio airwaves next year.

PopDash: Could you introduce yourselves to some of our readers who don't know who you are yet? What's you're style?

Stooshe: Our style is pretty out there. In terms of clothes we're quite bright. We have different kinds of characters which are just an exaggeration of our everyday life. Me -Courtney -  I just do whatever I want. Karis - 50s pin up girl in terms of hairstyle and tattoos, Al's got her 90s glam and hip hop with it, so we've all got different styles. In terms of music as well - it's out there, we're very real. Our only rule is no rules, so in terms of clothes and music that's what you're gonna get from Stooshe.

PopDash: With some artists you can't tell where they're from but you sound really, really British.

Stooshe: Yeah, we don't ever wanna start talking like this (American accent). We went to L.A last week and we were actually trying to talk like them but it wasn't working.

PopDash: Who are your musical influences?

Stooshe: It goes back to Motown; The Supremes, The Temptations and that sort of music to Salt N Pepa and TLC which is common ground for all of us. Karis loves hip-hop. We all try and use that and incorporate it into our music.

PopDash: All your styles are very retro; is that just who you are or is that something you thought about when you were making the group?

Stooshe: It was a bit of both. It's who we are because it's just an exaggeration of our personalities but when we made the group we thought, let's take it to another level, let's really use our personalities and make it into our style. And with what we listen to we can take things from TLC and those sort of moves but yet we can put that into a Motwon song. We just like to mix and match and mash things up.

We were found in Topshop and our producer already knew Karis and they already knew our style and wanted to exaggerate it. We had to be three separate characters. They didn't want to change us we were already happy with what we were wearing they just wanted to exaggerate it.

PopDash: On your songs there's a lot of interaction between the three of you. Does it come naturally or do you have to work on it?

Stooshe: It is natural. We just go in the booth and start chatting. There may be the odd time when it just sounds messy and we'll redo it but the idea is always on the spot. It's like 'okay let's just get in the booth and see what happens.' We know the subject and then we just talk. When we're performing, no performance is going to be the same because nine times our of ten one of us does something that wasn't planned. Because we're natural, we know each other, we know how each other works, we bounce off each other.

PopDash: Was that the highlight of 2011 for you?

Stooshe: Our first ever gig at Wireless Festival. At the time we were like 'oh my god' but from then on, working with amazing people like Nicki Minaj's stylist. Everything we're doing just seems to be getting better and better. Even going to L.A was amazing, shooting a video with Travie McCoy featuring on our song. You think ‘oh my god I've done that' it's crazy but it's all good and it's all positive.

PopDash: What are your plans for 2012?

Stooshe: We've got an album and single coming out next year. The single is coming out in February hopefully - ‘Love Me’ featuring Travie McCoy. We're going to continue gigging and doing the festivals as well, like Wireless Festival with Rihanna, Isle Of White and one in LA. Then, obviously, we just want to build our fan base.

PopDash And when is the album coming out?

Stooshe: The album should be out mid 2012. The style varies - we've got so many different songs on there from dub tracks to pop to urban and reggae. All the topics vary. Obviously ‘Betty’ and ‘Love Me’ are quite explicit and controversial. We've got topics in there about not wanting to go to work about having no money, we've even got a love song in there - with a Stooshe twist. It varies, it covers a whole range of genres so it will be quite interesting to see how that drops next year.

PopDash: Have you done a lot of gigs already?

Stooshe: When we started out we supported N-Dubz. We did quite a lot back then and then we had all the ‘Betty’ promo so gigs kind of died down a bit. Now we're doing the gigs again and we'll be doing the 'Love Me' promo. You know what we're very lucky to be doing the festivals but we're still doing the more intimate gigs and building our fan bass underground.

PopDash: Do you get people you've seen at multiple gigs?

A - We have our hardcore fans - got to big up or Stooshe fans that have been there since day one - but they're from all sorts of different places. We've got fans that come and they know the words, it's so surreal. We're standing here and thinking ‘you're singing what I'm saying’ - it's mad. It's very overwhelming.

PopDash: How did the video for 'Betty Woz Gone’ come about?

A- It wasn't even a main release so we just thought let's do a lyric video, it's something different, not many people are doing it and we were very lucky with the response. Usually a lyric video is literally just a picture of someone with lyrics so we wanted to do something different with it. People picked up on it and it got like 100,000 views - it was really weird. We underestimate how many people know who we are, we were just doing our thing. We do get recognised sometimes (in the street) and you're like 'me?' You think 'what have I got on? what have I done?' and then they're like 'are you from Stooshe?' and it's like 'oh yeah'. It's a nice feeling to know that people are actually watching us and are into what we're doing.
