Big In 2012: Lana Del Rey

'Born To Die' but destined for success in the coming year too...

By David Renshaw on Tuesday 3rd January 2012

Join us as we introduce you to the ten acts we think will be illuminating the pop world with their brilliant music, stunning performances and huge debut albums in 2012. Up first... Lana Del Rey.

Lana Del Rey may well need little introduction to anybody with a radio, TV or internet connection in the last six months but nevertheless, the next twelve months should well see Del Rey establish that she is far more than a one hit wonder.

That one hit is 'Video Games', the sultry and remorse-laden anthem that became one of last year's most definitive tracks. Chances are you heard it when someone forwarded you a link to the distinctive, found-footage style YouTube video and were hooked instantly. There is much debate about Del Rey and the perceived 'authenticity' of her looks, style and sound but, to put it simply, we couldn't care less about any of that.

If Lana Del Rey is a character then we're excited to follow her story in 2012. Like the Hollywood sirens she seeks to emulate, we'll watch on as she tackles the music world and regales us with more tales of brittle romance and nihilstic romance such as 'Video Games' and the freshly debuted 'Off To The Races'.

With debut album 'Born To Die' due for release on January 30th we won't have to wait long to see if LDR can match high expectations and avoid the backlash - something tells us that she might just do it with the flawless style and effortless grace she's displayed at every turn so far.

Lana Del Rey's debut album 'Born To Die' is released on January 30th through Polydor.
